About The Natural Sciences Museum Complex
Having an institutional tradition of half a century, with an excellent material basis and a pluridisciplinary structure, The Natural Sciences Museum Complex in Constanţa is considered an important reference for the cultural and scientific image of the municipality, with a high emblematic value in the summer offer of the Romanian seacoast.The Institution’s development in time, the need for a continuously diversified public offer, the city’s very alert rhythm of growing, brought about the occurrence and functional development of two placements, each one observing different domains of the educational act, that is: the stylish building of the Aquarium, open to the public in 1958 after the renovation of the old building on the esplanade of the sea in the proximity of the Casino. This institution was renewed several times, the last one in 2007, offering a real modern appearance.The Museum Complex is placed on the west side of the Soveja market, on Mamaia Blvd, in the NE part of the town. Consists of a sequence of buildings, the complex is build between the years 1972 – 1973 and modernized during the years 2006 - 2007. In thus generous space there can be found: th Microdelta, Dolphinarium, Planetarium, The Astronomic Observatory and a Permanent exhibition of exotic birds.
The Park of the Complex is an excellent recreation area, with alleys and benches placed among the trees and plant arrangements, all forming a mini dendrology with native and alien species. The Micro-reservation area has a body of water surrounded by willows and swamp vegetation, a piece of lacustrine ecosystem. With a staff of curators with higher education, among which three PhDs and two doctoral students, the institution is carrying out training educational programmers, being established as a reference for higher education in Constanta, but also for the other universities in the country. The curators of the institution also developed, in parallel with the museum, research programmers, activity that through the communicated and published work has ensured national and international recognition.These activities entangled institutional or individual participation to a series of organisms and professional organizations, among which we enumerate: Romanian Society of Ichtyology; Romanian Society of Ornithology; National Committee Oceanography; Romanian National Association of Museum Specialists in Natural Sciences; Romanian Federation of Zoo Gardens and Aquariums; Balkan Environmental Association; European Association for Marine Animals Protection.On a professional level has been developed bilateral collaboration with Aquarium in Varna/Bulgaria, the Institute of Zoology in Chisinau / Moldova and Beijing/PR China Aquarium; was promoted to operate in Constanta, in addition to the Natural Science Museum Complex, an International Office for natural science sponsored by the Balkan Environmental association (BENA / Thessaloniki).The specialists of the complex are permanently concerned with breeding and diversifying the patrimony which has at the moment over 30.000 exhibits, representing: mollusks, crustaceans, fish, birds and mammals. In this purpose have been established collaboration relations with numerous similar institutions in Europe, Asia and Africa.
